this is an ActionScript 2.0 Tutorial, if you are useing flash cs3/4 you will need to go File> Publish Settings> Flash
click the dropDown box and change it it AS2.0

With the text preloader, i get an error saying
"1120: Access of undefined property _root."

well this tutorial was designed for action script 2, i think thats an action script 3 error (or google seems to think so) are you using flash CS3 ?, well if so to fix the problem go to file>;publishSettings>flash(tab) and change the dropdown to Actionscript2 :D

hope this helps, if not, ill aquire CS3 some time soon and amend the tutorial.

ok done some Google trawling sins my last comment turns out that

"_root" is "root" in AS3

should sold yer problems :P

Changing _root to root gives this error:
"1061: Call to a possibly undefined method getBytesLoaded through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObject."

Changing to Action Script 2 shows the percent text as "NaN%"

well ive downloaded and installed CS3 it should work fine in Actionscript 2.0, so theres probably a mistake in your code somwhere. make sure if your on Actionscript 2.0 that your root is _root
